With the growing threat of HIV and AIDS and a prevalence increase from 2% in 1986 to 36% in 2003 and 23.4% in 2010, the Lesotho Nurses Association (LNA) recognised the vulnerability of its members and the high mortality rate. A partnership was formed between the LNA, the ICN and the Swedish Association of Health Professionals (SAHP) to establish a Wellness Centre. For all health workers in Lesotho, the Wellness Centre provides HIV testing and counselling (HTC), preventive and curative services, anti-retroviral (ARV) therapy and referral services. Lesotho makes nursing history The successful nursing partnership between the Lesotho Nurses Association, the Lesotho Ministry of Health, the Lesotho Nursing Council and representatives from nursing education institutions in Lesotho, which won a grant from the African Regulatory Collaborative (ARC) to develop a continuing professional development program for Lesotho, have successfully launched their draft CPD framework. A group of dedicated senior nurses (see picture below) worked with a technical adviser from the Commonwealth Nurses Federation and a technical support person from the ARC team to produce the draft CPD framework which is now being refined following input from a meeting of nurse leaders on Wednesday 21 September. The framework, when finalised, and the new requirements, will be made available to all nurses, midwives and nursing assistants in Lesotho.
